Tesla plans $119B investment in Terafab chip manufacturing facility
Summary
Elon Musk has proposed an ambitious semiconductor manufacturing project named “Terafab,” which could reach an investment of $119 billion. The facility aims to be a vertically integrated operation, handling everything from chip design to packaging in one location, to support Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX hardware needs.
While the initial phase is estimated at $55 billion, a smaller $3 billion pilot fab at Giga Texas will serve as a testing ground. Grimes County, Texas, is currently the primary candidate for the main facility, which aims to produce 1 terawatt of chips annually. Intel is reportedly being considered as a potential partner for this massive undertaking.
