Anthropic CEO Slams Pentagon Decision As 'Unprecedented'

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei strongly objected to the U.S. Department of Defense's order that bans military defense contractors from using Anthropic's AI products, labeling the decision "unprecedented" and "punitive." Anthropic objects specifically to the use of its AI for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems that lack human input, viewing these uses as fundamental violations of American rights.

Amodei clarified that while Anthropic is fine with most U.S. government use cases, they oppose turning decisions about war over completely to machines. This action followed the U.S. labeling Anthropic a "supply chain risk to national security." Immediately after this announcement, rival company OpenAI secured a contract with the DoD to deploy its AI models across military networks, drawing its own criticism regarding privacy concerns.
