Colombian President Proposes Building a Bitcoin Mining Hub

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has proposed transforming the country’s Caribbean coast into a Bitcoin mining hub to drive economic growth and leverage surplus renewable energy. Citing successful models in Paraguay and Venezuela, Petro suggested that cities like Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha could host mining facilities. He emphasized a vision where the Indigenous Wayúu community would serve as project co-owners. With Colombia generating 75% of its electricity from renewable sources, experts suggest this move could monetize unused energy. However, as Petro’s term concludes in August and he is ineligible for reelection, the initiative's future remains uncertain under potential successors.
