Elon Musk’s XChat Tops App Store, Beats ChatGPT and Claude at Launch

Elon Musk's new standalone messaging app, XChat, has rapidly ascended to the number one spot on the US App Store, outperforming OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude shortly after its iPhone release. This achievement marks an early success for Musk's strategy to integrate messaging, AI, and crypto-ready payments into a unified X-branded application. XChat, developed in Rust with end-to-end encryption, offers features like voice/video calls and file transfers without requiring a phone number, and supports group chats of up to 481 members, with plans to increase the cap. The app also integrates the Grok assistant for summarizing files and drafting messages. The launch of XChat is seen as a precursor to X's upcoming X Money wallet, which will initially support fiat transfers and later incorporate cryptocurrency support, positioning XChat as a competitor to established messaging platforms and payment services like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, PayPal, and Venmo.
