Apple fixes bug that allowed FBI to read deleted Signal messages

Apple has addressed a security vulnerability that permitted law enforcement to access readable previews of encrypted Signal messages. The flaw originated in the iOS notification database, which unexpectedly retained message content even after the app was deleted or the messages were set to disappear. This issue was brought to light following court documents detailing an FBI investigation, prompting Signal President Meredith Whittaker to demand a fix. Apple's latest iOS security update now ensures that notifications marked for deletion are no longer retained on the device, closing the loophole that bypassed Signal's end-to-end encryption.
