Bitcoin BIP-361 Targets Quantum Security Threat

A group of Bitcoin developers, including Jameson Lopp, has introduced BIP-361, a proposal titled "Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset." The initiative aims to protect the Bitcoin network from potential quantum computing threats by eventually freezing roughly 1.7 million BTC held in older, non-quantum-resistant addresses. The three-phase plan would restrict new deposits to legacy addresses, invalidate vulnerable signatures, and offer a recovery mechanism for legitimate owners. While framed as a defensive measure, the proposal faces significant pushback from community members who criticize the potential "confiscatory" nature of forcing upgrades on existing holdings.
