Aave Founder Says DAOs Must Evolve

Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave, stated that Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are currently "extraordinarily difficult" to operate due to internal conflicts, slow proposal processes, and politicization, often mirroring the worst aspects of corporate bureaucracy without accountability. He believes DAOs are not doomed but require evolution, suggesting that while rules should remain in code and treasuries visible, tokenholders should not vote on every operational detail. Kulechov advocates for dedicated teams and leaders to handle day-to-day decisions, as they require full context and the ability to make quick calls. The key difference from traditional companies, he notes, is that these leaders' performance is entirely on-chain and transparent, allowing tokenholders to hold them accountable by replacing them if objectives are unmet. These comments follow recent governance disputes within the Aave DAO, including a major delegate announcing its withdrawal over concerns about governance dynamics.
