Ripple to acquire BC Payments to accelerate growth in APAC region
Summary
Ripple has announced its intention to acquire BC Payments, the Australian subsidiary of Banking Circle, to secure an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL). This strategic move is designed to accelerate Ripple's regulated growth within the Asia Pacific region. BC Payments, launched in 2023, offers solutions for cross-border payments to fintechs and banks facing challenges with access to international payment rails. Obtaining the AFSL will enable Ripple to enhance its payments platform in Australia, allowing financial institutions to move value across borders faster and more transparently while adhering to local regulations. According to Fiona Murray, Ripple's regional director for Asia Pacific, licensing is fundamental to their strategy, and the AFSL strengthens their ability to scale Ripple Payments across the region. The acquisition will allow Ripple Payments to manage the entire transaction process, integrating traditional banking with digital assets, and supports the company's strong regional growth, evidenced by a nearly doubled APAC payments volume in 2025.
