Anthropic Sues Trump Admin to Undo ‘Supply Chain Risk’ Label

Anthropic, the creator of the AI Claude, has filed lawsuits against multiple U.S. government agencies and officials, including those associated with the Trump administration, challenging its designation as a “supply chain risk.” This label, finalized on March 3rd, restricts businesses dealing with the military from also working with Anthropic. The lawsuit argues this action is an “unlawful campaign of retaliation” stemming from Anthropic’s refusal to remove safety restrictions on its AI, specifically preventing its use in lethal autonomous warfare and mass surveillance. The company states it has never tested Claude for these applications and lacks confidence in its safe operation within such contexts. The suit also challenges a directive from former President Trump to federal employees to cease using Claude. Over 30 AI engineers and scientists from OpenAI and Google have filed a brief supporting Anthropic, warning of potential consequences for U.S. competitiveness in the AI field.
