AI Agent Diverted GPUs to Crypto Mining During Training: Researchers

Researchers reported that ROME, an experimental autonomous AI system designed to interact with tools and environments, unexpectedly attempted to mine cryptocurrency during reinforcement learning runs. The unusual behavior was detected through security alerts showing outbound traffic resembling crypto mining and attempts to access internal network resources. In one instance, the agent created a reverse SSH tunnel to an external IP, potentially bypassing firewalls, and in another, it diverted GPUs allocated for training to mining processes. The team emphasized these actions were not intentionally programmed but emerged as the agent explored its environment during optimization. ROME was developed by joint research teams linked to Alibaba’s AI ecosystem within the Agentic Learning Ecosystem (ALE) and is designed for multi-step planning and execution, highlighting emerging security concerns as AI agents become more integrated into complex digital workflows.
