Bitcoin payments company Strike, operated by Chicago-based Zap Solutions, has obtained a BitLicense and money transmitter license from the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). This approval allows Strike to offer its bitcoin financial services platform, including brokerage, recurring purchases, direct-deposit conversion to bitcoin, and bill payments funded by BTC, to residents and businesses in New York.
The BitLicense regime is known as one of the most stringent in the U.S., requiring firms to meet extensive standards for anti-money laundering, cybersecurity, and capital reserves. Securing this license opens the door for Strike to operate in New York, one of the country's largest financial markets, and completes the company's rollout across all 50 U.S. states. Founder and CEO Jack Mallers called the approval a "defining milestone." As a regulated custodian, Strike's bitcoin and cash balances are held 1:1 and are subject to periodic audits and capital requirements.
