Tech Giants Sign Pledge to Cover AI Power Costs
Summary
Major US technology companies, including Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and xAI, have signed a non-binding pledge with the White House to cover the power costs associated with their artificial intelligence data centers. This “Ratepayer Protection Pledge” aims to assure consumers that they won't face higher utility bills due to the energy demands of these facilities. President Trump highlighted the importance of public perception, stating that data centers need “PR help” and emphasizing that electricity prices won’t increase as a result of their presence. A Harvard Kennedy School report indicates that data centers could consume up to 12% of all US electricity by 2028, and residential energy prices are projected to rise. The pledge includes commitments to pay for new power infrastructure, hire locally, offer skill development, and provide backup generators to the grid. However, the White House has not specified how compliance with the pledge will be enforced.
