Cake Wallet Brings Self-Custodial Lightning to Mobile (Without Fidgety Channel-Management)

Cake Wallet has released an update introducing self-custodial Lightning Network support designed for everyday mobile use, eliminating the traditional friction points like managing channels, inbound liquidity, or continuous uptime.

This improved user experience is powered by an integration utilizing the Breez SDK and Spark, a Bitcoin-native layer-2 solution, allowing users to maintain sovereignty over their funds without sacrificing convenience. Cake Labs CEO Vikrant Sharma emphasized that the goal was to avoid forcing users into a choice between convenience and sovereignty.

The update also focuses on privacy and usability, introducing human-readable Lightning addresses (using @cake.cash usernames) for receiving payments, and integrating Lightning directly into Cake Pay for purchasing gift cards or loading prepaid debit cards. Furthermore, the wallet consolidates on-chain Bitcoin, Lightning, privacy tools, and hardware wallet support into a single application, aiming to make Lightning a practical, reliable payment layer for mobile users.
