A Los Angeles County jury found Eric Halem, a 38-year-old former LAPD officer, guilty of kidnapping and robbery for stealing $350,000 in bitcoin from a 17-year-old in 2024. During the two-week trial, prosecutors detailed how Halem and three accomplices posed as police officers, using LAPD-issued handcuffs to restrain the victim and his girlfriend during the home invasion in Koreatown. The victim, identified as Daniel, testified that he surrendered a hard drive containing the cryptocurrency after the men threatened his life. Halem, who left the LAPD in 2022 after 13 years but was still a reserve officer at the time of the robbery, is scheduled for sentencing on March 31. His co-defendants have not yet faced trial.
